micro:bit League Soccer (mLS)

Objective

To design own maker robot according to competition requirement and to write the program using Makecode Block Editor to control their own makers robot movements by using micro:bit radio control commands.

Competition Requirement:

  • 2 x maker robots
  • 4 x micro:bits **get it from elvirasys.com
  • 1 x Laptop with charger (at least)
  • Assembly kit (cutters, scissors, sellotape etc)

Category

There are FOUR (4) categories:

  • Primary school category ( 10 – 12 years old )
  • Secondary school category ( 13 – 17 years old )

General Guidelines:

  • The competition is opened to all schools in Malaysia.
  • Participant may only participate in ONE (1) category.
  • Each team consist of TWO (2) participants only.
  • Each team must have THREE (3) maker robots.
  • Each team must have minimum of FOUR (4) micro:bit.
  • All rules and regulations are subject to change without prior notice.

General Rules - micro:bit League Soccer (mLS)

[Regulation for material use]

  1.  Participants must use BBC micro:bit platform for the competition.
  2.  No other platform is allowed to be used in the competition.
  3.  Only JavaScript Blocks Editor should be used during the competition.
  4. No Sensors are allowed for the competition.
  5. Teams should prepare and bring all the necessary equipment (laptops, batteries, extension trailing socket, servo motors, battery holder, caster wheel, jumper, crocodile clips, tyres) for the competition. Organizer will not provide the equipment.

[Regulations on behavior (Safety first)]

Behaviors listed below are prohibited and may result in disqualification:

  1. For primary & secondary schools category, mentors are not allowed to enter the competition area.
  2. Teachers/Parents/Mentors are not allowed to give instruction or guidance to their teams during the competition.
  3. For special education category, mentors/teachers/parents are allowed to enter the competition and also allowed to give instruction or guidance to their teams during the competition.
  4. Causing damage to the competition playing fields, models or robots of other teams.
  5. Using dangerous items or displaying behavior that disrupt the competition.
  6. Using inappropriate words or behaving inappropriately towards other teams, audience, judges or the tournament.
  7. Creating situations which judges deem unacceptable or interfering.
  8. Penalty may be imposed on a team if there is any violation to the General Rules.
  9. The judges’ decisions are final and any objections with regards to the results will not be entertained

Rules & Regulations:

1. Teams

  • Each team must have THREE (3) maker robots (2 active maker robots , 1  reserve maker robot)
  • Each team must consist of TWO (2) participants only.
  • Each team must has a minimum of FOUR (4) micro:bit.

2. Rule Clarification

  • The referee’s decision is considered as final during game play.
  • Mentors must not be involved in any rules discussion.
  • Once the referee come to a decision, no more discussion will be accepted.

3. Robot Specifications

  • Construction and Programming of maker robots must be done exclusively by the students.
  • The maximum weight for the maker robot is 600 gram. Maker robot exceed the maximum weight will be disqualified.
  • A maker robot shall not be larger either in length or in width, than 25 centimeters.
  • Maker robots will be evaluated by referee. Maker robots selection depend on rules and size dimension.
  • Maker robots are not allowed to use any kind of clamp/gripper which are intended to harm the opponent team or to block the soccer ball.
  • The hardware that will be used during the competition:
    • BBC micro:bit.
    • Maker Robot.
  • Maker robot requirement:
    • 2 x 6V 360 continuous servos.
    • 1 x Castor Wheel.
    • 4 x AA batteries/5V power bank.
    • 2 x AAA batteries.
    • Maker robot body –box/metal/plastic/wood/etc.

4. Robot Control

  • Maker robots must be controlled by using micro:bit radio commands.
  • Each maker robots must have a receiver micro:bit and a transmitter micro:bit.
  • Each receiver and transmitter micro:bit pair will be assigned a specific radio group by the organizer. 
  • Participants are not allowed to change the radio group.
  • Changing the radio group without written permission from the organizer will cause the team to  be disqualified.

5. Games play

  • The game will start with referee toss a coin. The team winning the toss can choose whether to kick off at the start of first half or second half
  • The team kicking off, will kick the ball from the center spot on the soccer field.
  • The team kicking off will place their maker robots first. These cannot be moved once the team has placed them. After that, next team can place their robots.
  • The game will start on the referee’s command. All maker robots must be started immediately.
  • Any maker robots that started or released before the referees command will be removed from the field for one minute.
  • Any maker robots that are not on the soccer field or started immediately, will be ruled as “damaged” and removed from the field for one minute.
  • If a goal is scored, the non-scoring team will kick off to restart the competition from the center spot on the soccer field.
  • In the event of foul, makers robot must be stopped until the referee resolves the problem or reposition the makers robot and the ball.
  • Only referee is allowed to reposition the robot and the ball during the game.
  • Each team is allowed to have unlimited practice on the field. The field will be closed thirty (30) minutes before the start of challenge.

6. Soccer Field

  • Soccer Field Size will be 180×130 centimeter square.
  • The soccer field will have a green carpet surface and wall boundaries

7. Soccer Ball

  • Will be inform soon.

8. Scoring

  • The micro:bit League Soccer will be run in a league format
  • Table scoring will be following standard soccer league style.
  • Three (3) points for the winner
  • One (1) point for draw.
  • No point for loosing.

9. Winner

  • The team with the highest points in the league will be the winner
  • If the team has equal points, the winner will be decided by goal difference.

Bootcamp is one day workshop for teachers and student for the competition preparation.
